Crashed Sriwijaya Air plane’s cockpit voice recorder finally found

Indonesian divers have finally retrieved the missing voice recorder from the Sriwijaya Air plane that crashed in early January.

The cockpit voice recorder was found under mud on the seabed off the coast of Java.

It will now be analysed for any clues into the cause of the crash. Authorities have already released a preliminary crash report but expect to update it once data from voice recorder has been checked.

The preliminary report said there were problems with the engine thrust. The plane’s age at 27 years old was also flagged as a possible factor.

Sriwijaya Air Flight SJ182 crashed minutes after taking off from Jakarta, claiming the lives of 62 people.

The flight data recorder was located three days after the crash but the cockpit voice recorder was separated from its casing – probably on impact – and a painstaking manual search continued without the benefit of an underwater location beacon.

Indonesia’s air safety investigation agency said it will take up to a week to analyse the data.
