Major events organizer, organic farm ice cream and visitor centre, and wilderness holiday organization get top sustainable Scottish Thistle awards.
The special sustainable tourism section was sponsored by Scottish Natural Heritage.
Top prize went to event organizer Maximillion. With a portfolio of more than 250 events every year, Maximillion’s focus on sustainability gained it the big prize.
The judges said that the company demonstrates innovative and sustainable practices in three key areas: business operations, green delivery and the development of green products. It also has a commitment to social and environmental responsibility and the company’s business model enables it to engage with its customers, staff, community and the industry at large to develop a sustainable tourism vision.
John Strachan, Maximillion managing director, said ”Organisations that have yet to grasp the green thistle need to wake up and understand that we will not have a tourism industry if there is not a collective will and wholesale commitment to fundamentally change from tartan to green”
Runners up were Cream O’ Galloway Visitor Centre, a four star tourism attraction with a strong commitment to sustainable issues and practises AND make truly great ice cream. The organic farm is one of the most visited attractions in Dumfries and Galloway. The judges applauded the farm for creating and retaining employment in a rural area in an ethical and sustainable way.
The second runner up was Wilderness Scotland who will donate 25% of their net profits to conservation projects this year. Said their boss, Stevie Christie “By combining commercial success with the highest environmental and social standards we have demonstrated what a sustainable approach to business can achieve. Ultimately, we hope to provide an inspiring model for other businesses to follow – as well as amazing holidays for our clients"
