Cruise lines delayed and airport closed by tropical storm Fay

Tropical storm Fay led to the closure of LF Wade airport in Bermuda and the delay of two cruise ships yesterday.

The Foreign Office warned on Sunday that the airport was closed to outgoing and incoming air traffic.

The Royal Gazette newspaper reported that the terminal building of LF Wade Airport has experienced major flooding.

Runways had only been open for emergency flights, most flights had been on ‘rolling delays’ and passengers weren’t being allowed through the airport.

Cruise ships The Grandeur of the Seas and the Norwegian Dawn were also due to come to dock at the island but were forced to put back their schedule while final checks on the channels as well as the wharfs at Dockyard are being carried out.

Last night the Foreign Office updated its website to say: "Following the impact of Tropical Storm Fay on Bermuda this morning (Sunday 12th October), LF Wade airport is expected to re-open for this evening’s flights, including the delayed British Airways arrival.

"We still advise however, that travellers to and from Bermuda check with their airline prior to doing so."

Local reports say 18,588 customers are without power and all schools will remain closed today.
