Cruise lines turning to Brooklyn for turn-arounds
Cunard’s decision to abandon Manhattan as a turn-around port for its Queen Mary 2 and turn instead to Brooklyn’s Red Hook reinforces the city’s major effort to shore up the tarnished Manhattan facility.
The Brooklyn port is a “survival effort if New York City is to hang on to its reputation as the East Coast’s most dynamic (and increasingly popular) turn-around port,” wrote Cruise Critic News.
“Due to dissatisfaction with Manhattan’s New York Cruise Terminal, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have already transferred some ships across the Hudson to Bayonne, New Jersey’s Cape Liberty,” it said.
Said Dean Brown, executive vice president of fleet operations for Cunard and Princess:
“We saw great potential in Brooklyn to develop a passenger facility that will take better care of customers, make it easer to get through and easier to use.”
The Red Hook facility is close to the airport and an easy taxi ride to Manhattan.
