Cunard’s QM2 slammed by US health inspectors

Cunard has defended its flagship Queen Mary 2 after it failed a health inspection in New York earlier this month.

USA Today reported that health inspectors from the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found cockroaches in a food storage area, human hair in an ice machine, dirty water in the splash pool and “numerous food safety violations” in an area where food is stored for the King’s Court buffet.

The report is said to have used the word “filthy” several times.

As part of its Vessel Sanitation Programme, the CDC conducts unannounced inspections of passenger ships docking in U.S. ports twice a year and grades them on a 100 point scale. A score below 86 is considered failing. The CDC gave the Queen Mary 2 a score of 84.

In a statement sent to USA Today, Cunard suggested the Queen Mary 2’s poor showing during the inspection was an aberration

“The poor assessment on 10 June resulted largely from one small area of the ship’s overall operation,” the line said in the statement.

Cunard added that in the wake of the inspection managers on the ship and on shore have “redefined certain roles and responsibilities to clarify accountability, and the company’s training schedule has been stepped up”.
