Cyclone hits Vietnam and China

While super-storm Sandy bears down on the US East Coast, cyclone Son Tinh has been causing extensive damage in Vietnam and southern China.

Vietnam Airlines cancelled 62 scheduled flights to and from Da Nang, Hue, Dong Hoi and Vinh airports over the weekend to avoid problems related to the storm.

More than 6,800 passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

In Hainan, the Chinese provincial civil affairs bureau reported that more than 82,000 people were moved to temporary shelters, where water, food and medicine were provided.

Train services and shipping across the Qiongzhou Strait, which links Hainan island with Guangdong province, were suspended due to high winds and rains.

Tourism departments in the region were urged to take preventative measures to mitigate the storm’s impact.

At least 24 people are now known to have died as a result of Tropical Storm Son-Tinh in the Philippines.
