David Cameron supports scrapping APD for kids, say reports
Campaigners have welcomed reports that David Cameron is in favour of a plan to axe APD on children’s flights.
The ‘Scrap The Tax On Family Flights’ campaign, launched today ahead of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement on December 3, is a further initiative by the Fair Tax on Flying lobby group.
Backed by a group of more than 30 aviation, travel and tourism partners, and backed by MPs, it is calling for under-12s to be exempt from Air Passenger Duty.
It says this could save a family with two young children as much as £340 on a return flight to Florida.
The Sunday Express claims that the Prime Minister supports the idea.
It reports David Cameron told a recent meeting of Tory MPs: "I really like this one. I have three children under 10 myself."
Richard Singer, European MD of Travelzoo, which has been campaigning for the tax to be cut, said: "Travelzoo fully supports the ‘Scrap The Tax on Family Flights’ campaign and welcomes the news that David Cameron has voiced his support for this initiative.
"A removal of tax on all flights for children under the age of 12 is in keeping with our aim to fight what we call the Parent Trap – the combined effect of the government fines for term time holidays, the highest flight tax in the world and the increase in price of travel during peak dates."
A poll by ComRes found that 65% think the Government should exempt children under the age of 12 from Air Passenger Duty.
It also revealed that 75% believe it is unfair that British families pay a flight tax while those in many other countries do not.
The ‘Scrap The Tax on Family Flights’ campaign believes abolishing the charge on children will cost the Treasury about £50million a year, 1.6% of the £3billion it expects to take in APD in the next year.
It said: "in August the Government pledged to put families at the heart of policy-making with a test to ensure all domestic policies help family life. APD acts against this stated aim."
