Delegation Promotes Tourism/Trade to Taiwan
The opening of a new high speed rail link between the Taiwanese capital city of Taipei and the port city of Kaohsiung later this year is set to stimulate more Australian tourists to visit the country’s second largest city, Ms Chu-Lan Yeh, Acting Mayor, Kaohsiung, said yesterday at the start of a week long tourism, trade and cultural mission to Sydney and Brisbane.
Ms Yeh, the first Minister in the Ministry of Communications and Transportation under the current government, headed the largest ever delegation of senior officials from the Kaohsiung City Government to visit Australia.
During the delegation’s inaugural press conference held in the Sydney Chinese Culture and Education Centre, Ms Yeh said that the high speed rail link would reduce travel time between the two important centres to just 90 minutes.
About 10,000 Australians visited Kaohsiung out of the approximately 45,000 Australians who travelled to Taiwan last year.
In the lead up to the opening of the high speed rail link and in a bid to increase the awareness of these and other tourism resources Ms Yeh said that a number of incentives are being made to tourists visiting Kaohsiung in October. These include complimentary gifts and rides on the port ferry. As well, there is a complimentary accommodation package valid for a one night stay at an area resort.
“We want visitors to get to know Taiwan through the achievements in culture and art of Kaohsiung,” said Ms Yeh. The acting mayor said there was also an investment and trade slant to the tourism promotion mission citing plans for a light rail system as well as an underground rail network plus the intent to build a World Trade Centre in the port city.
