Delta Air Lines plans transborder deal with WestJet
Delta Air Lines is planning yet another joint venture airline alliance.
Delta has signed an initial agreement to form a transborder JV with Canadian carrier WestJet which will ultimately see the coordinating of joint schedules on US-Canada routes.
There will also be expanded codesharing and a deeper alignment of the respective loyalty programs.
Of course before all this, approval is needed first from the two airline boards and regulatory authorities in the two countries.
"With its strong brand and employee- and customer-centric culture, WestJet is the perfect partner for us in the U.S.-Canada transborder segment and together we will produce great results for our respective employees, customers and investors," said Steve Sear, Delta global sales EVP and president – International.
The tie-up will see increased frequencies and lead to new transborder routes opening up, the airlines said.
It will bring ‘heightened competition and an enriched product offering’ said Ed Sims, WestJet Commercial EVP.
Calgary based WestJet also said it plans to nearly double its fleet size to almost 100 planes by 2020.
WestJet is also launching a new low cost carrier unit called Swoop sometime in late 2018.
