Demand for Boutique Wellington on the rise
Positively Wellington Tourism’s Australian Marketing Manager Sarah Peacock says that Wellington, New Zealand’s art and culture capital, has seen significant developments in the boutique accommodation sector over the last 12 months.
“Wellington is a boutique city – small but rich in its offerings to visitors – and the growing range of independent and unique properties adds yet another dimension to what we can offer.”
The latest addition to Wellington’s extensive boutique accommodation offering is Villa Margarita, a modern two-bedroom homestay property located just 15 minutes north of the city, and offering abundant open space and spectacular views of Pauatahanui Inlet, Mana Island and beyond to the South Island.
Also new is Lambton Heights, a luxurious and intimate heritage bed and breakfast property in inner-city Kelburn, which offers just two guestrooms (soon to be three), plus a private garden and spa pool, and sweeping vistas of the city of Wellington and the harbour.
At the luxury end of the spectrum, 298 Oriental Parade is a Bed and Breakfast with a stunning harbour-side location, while The Clark Collection offers two properties in the Wellington area; Palliser, an historic Victorian villa on the hill overlooking Oriental Bay, and The Ranch, a superb 65 acre estate overlooking the Kapiti Coast.
And in the central city area is the Museum Hotel de Wheels, so named because the original building – at one time doomed for demolition – was shifted onto its current site using a series of railway bogies, to enable construction of Te Papa, the now-internationally acclaimed national museum of New Zealand. Earlier this year, in addition to 70 hotel rooms, the Museum Hotel added 95 stylish apartment style rooms.
“The feedback received from travel trade in Australia is that there is real demand for boutique accommodation experiences in Wellington,” Ms Peacock says, adding, “Positively Wellington Tourism is working with individual operators to continue market growth.”
Wellington boasts around 30 boutique accommodation properties. To find the full listing, visit the city’s official website: WellingtonNZ.com. Visit the Accommodation section, and embark on an Advanced Accommodation Search. Select ‘Guest and Hosted’ under Accommodation Type then ‘Boutique’ in the Category search.
