Germany plans ‘lockdown’ for unvaccinated

Monday, 17 Nov, 2021 0

The next Germany government will likely toughen Covid restrictions which could result in a lockdown for unvaccinated people.

All three parties vying to form the next government will strengthen Covid restrictions as infections surge.

The rate swelled to over 300 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last week.

The Social Democrats the Greens and the Free Democrats agreed to impose stricter curbs for the unvaccinated, including requiring a negative test before travelling by public transport.

Greens’ leader Robert Habeck called it essentially a ‘lockdown for the unvaccinated.’

"Our vaccination rate is still under 75% of the German population," Dr. Christine Falk, president of the German Society for Immunology, told Deutsche Welle.

"Combined with the lack of contact restrictions, this is allowing the virus to spread almost exclusively among the unvaccinated."

It would mirror similar restrictions in Austria.

Unvaccinated people in Austria are permitted out of their homes only to work, food shop or emergencies.

In Germany it could affect 14 million people.

Legislation on the new rules is expected later this week.
