DFAT upgrades Thailand advisories after New Years Eve Bangkok bombings

Thursday, 02 Jan, 2007 0

In the wake of the New Years Even bombings in Bangkok, DFAT has upgraded its travel advisory to Thailand overall to a “High Degree of caution” for and “Reconsider your need to travel” to Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla.

DFAT has not singled Bangkok out for specific mention, with the “no coup coup” taking place recently with many holidaymakers to Thailand continuing with their plans.

The British Foreign Office has warned British travellers not to travel around Bangkok in the wake of a series of bomb attacks in the Thai capital, which according to officials, around six blasts rocked the city, killing at least two people and injuring more than 20.

The British FCO has also changed its travel advice for the country, recommending Britons do not travel about in Bangkok “unless absolutely necessary”.

The bombings in several parts of the city were the culmination of a year of unrest in Thailand, including a military coup three months ago and growing Muslim insurgency in the south, with warnings there is a “high threat” of terrorism in the south east Asian country and that attacks “could be indiscriminate and against places frequented by foreigners”.

Thai National Police Chief Gen Ajirawit Suphanaphesat said the insurgents were probably not behind the attacks, but the culprits and motive are as yet unknown.

In the wake of the explosions, Bangkok’s Mayor Apirak Kosayothin ordered the cancellation of the two major public New Year’s Eve celebrations and other smaller ones.
