Washington State sits in the upper Northwest corner of the contiguous United States, but it’s the eastern side of the state where visitors will discover hidden gems, secret foodie spots, and lessr known highlights that only the locals know about.

 

Head straight to Spokane

The second-largest city in Washington, Spokane offers visitors a warm and casual culture, with a foodie scene that’s making a name for itself across the country. The Kendall-Yards district in particular is home to a plethora of exciting food options, including Mediterranean-influenced comfort food at Baba. Book a guided tour with Wander Spokane to visit several key sites from Riverfront Park and Spokane Falls to the iconic 155-foot Great Northern Clocktower and the Pavilion that features light shows every weekend. The city also offers a slice of history at The Historic Davenport in downtown Spokane, where guests unlock Spokane history in this iconic hotel reinvented for the 21st Century.

 

Farms and wineries in Walla Walla

Recognised among the finest wine regions in the nation, Walla Walla features more than 130 wineries and nearly 3,000 acres of grapes. Stroll through Walla Walla’s tree-lined city center, recognised as one of the best small town Main Streets in the country. The city unveils a crafty mix of vintage shops, cafes, bookstores, tasting rooms, restaurants and more. With community-centered offerings including public art, seasonal Farmers Markets and outdoor concerts there is something for everyone. Those looking for a quaint experience visit Frog Hollow Farm, famous for its heirloom tomatoes. The farm is open to the public showcasing a cute farm store, children’s area, friendly animals including pigs, goats and chickens, pick your own vegetable and herb beds. This is a local hidden gem not to be missed.

 

Explore the small towns

Many of the region’s small communities are waiting to be discovered, with exciting food and drink scenes and unique local history. Wenatchee, is located in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range, a vibrant city nestled in a valley famous for its orchards. Here, visitors will discover a delicious food scene with Pybus Market at its center. The remodeled warehouse sits on the waterfront offering hungry explorers plenty of options. To escape the city, visitors can head to Omhe Gardens, a wooded area that sits on a hilltop above Wenatchee, offering panoramic views of the Columbia River. Further South, Palouse is named for the region and the river that runs through it, offering visitors an abundance of outdoor activities, from driving the Palouse Scenic Byway and paddling the Palouse River to exploring Kamiak Butte State Park.

 

Venture outdoors all year round

Eastern Washington sees considerably less rain than the western side of the state with 300 days of sunshine a year, and four distinct seasons, so visitors can enjoy the plethora of outdoor activities all year round. Additionally, much of the outdoor space in the region is protected land, so travelers can explore endless stunning scenery. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest encompasses 3.8 million acres of forest land, perfect for mountain biking and hiking. For those visiting during the winter months, Spokane offers the perfect base camp for snow sports as a ski town in city form. Five ski resorts sit within a 90-minute drive, the city has easy access to skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.
