Walt Disney Co has unveiled more details of its new Shanghai Disneyland theme park, revealing six themed lands and attractions based on Star Wars and Marvel characters.

At a media presentation in Shanghai, CEO Bob Iger unveiled a scale model of the park showing the  themed lands – Adventure Isle, Gardens of Imagination, Mickey Avenue, Tomorrowland, Treasure Cove and Fantasyland.

The $5.5 billion theme park which was developed with China’s state-owned Shanghai Shendi Group, will appeal to Chinese visitors and will have the first ever Mandarin language production of the Lion King live show.

Other notable attractions include two resort hotels – Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and 800-room Toy Story Hotel, and Disneytown shopping, dining and entertainment district.

At the heart of the park the Enchanted Storybook Castle will be the biggest of its kind in the world.

"We are building something truly special here in Shanghai that not only showcases the best of Disney’s storytelling but also celebrates and incorporates China’s incredibly rich heritage," said Iger.

"We are taking everything we’ve learned from our six decades of exceeding expectations to create a truly magical place that is both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese."

The park is set for a grand opening in spring 2016.
