‘Do’ a European culinary tour on a NYC break

New York City inbound visitation figures continue to rise, buoyed by the soaring cost of short-haul holidays from the UK and the continued value the city offers – despite the devaluation of the pound against the dollar.

With the euro at an all-time high against the pound, a holiday in Europe has never been more expensive. Visitors can conduct their European Grand Tour in New York City:

Begin your stay in London by checking into the London NYC. Be sure to make your reservation at the exclusive Gordon Ramsay at the London NYC in advance of your stay.

Foodies will love the European flair demonstrated by New York’s eateries. Down a bratwurst with your beer at the Hallo Berlin beer hall. In summer, the garden opens to provide opportunities to sun while you sip your stein.

Café de Bruxelles on Greenwich Avenue offers moules frites that would give even the sellers on the Grand Place a run for their money. For Italian cuisine, head over to Antica Venezia in the West Village or Firenze on the Upper East Side depending on whether it’s the canals or art treasures you hold a yen for.

Alternatively, tapas might be just the thing if you’re traveling with a group of friends. Barcelona Bar offers a wide array of options.

Paris may be known as the ‘City of Lights’, but we can guarantee that Times Square has a few more than the Place de la Concorde. Brush up on your French cinema by catching a film at the Paris Theater. Tickets $11.

The pound may be doing poorly against the euro – but we can’t forge about the Swiss Franc or Swedish Kroner either. Both are pummeling the pound also. Shop til you drop by picking up bargains at Face Stockholm (the cosmetics purveyor) or fine cigars and smoking accoutremonts at Davidoff of Geneva. You may not be able to smoke them in public establishments in New York, but you won’t be at a loss for selection.  Both boutiques have locations in the Shops at Columbus Circle.

Need a drink after all that dry French humour? Then head over to Dublin 6 where the West Village crowd is sure to give you a warm welcome – even if few of the brews are actually Irish. Otherwise, head out of the euro zone and go back to Switzerland by visiting Gstaad – a bar that allows skiers to practice their skills on a simulated video wall in the heart of Chelsea.

Finally, Manhattan doesn’t have all the European treasures. Greenpoint in Brooklyn offers live music and Polish sausage at the Warsaw Bar and Bistro. Check schedules in advance to see what rock band will be performing – luckily all concerts will be in English.
