Domestic tourism looks for an Easter boost
After the impact of foot and mouth at the same time last year, the domestic tourism industry is hoping for a boost to business over the coming Easter holiday period.
The English Tourism Council (ETC) says that many operators are reporting strong business for Easter, with the recent mild weather helping to bolster last minute bookings.
ETC Chief Executive Mary Lynch said: “This is a crucial time for English tourism. All the signs seem to be that we will have a good Easter. There’s no doubt we’ll get more business than the same time last year. But what we’d really like to see is a return to the healthy levels of growth we were achieving prior to 2001.”
Ian Mounser from Superbreak said: “Bookings for UK short breaks are around 30% up on Easter 2001. Forward bookings for the summer are also looking good”.
Jonathan Smith from English Country Cottages reported that the second Easter week was looking particularly strong. “Bookings for next week are excellent and well up on the same period in 2000. The most popular hotspots for cottage holidays are Cornwall, Devon and Norfolk”.
The English Tourism Council estimates that 2.6 million trips will be taken over the Easter period, resulting in spend of around £40 million.
