Dominican Republic to expand Santo Domingo international airport
VINCI Airports, concessionaire of six airports in the Dominican Republic since 2016 has seen its concession renewed by the Government of the Dominican Republic. This represents another 30-year extension.
This is more than positive news for VINCI Airports. Under the extended concession contract, which will run from 2030 to 2060, VINCI Airports will be responsible for financing, operating, maintaining, developing and upgrading the modernization of the airports.
An upfront payment of 775 million dollars will be made by VINCI affiliate in the country to the Dominican state. VINCI Airports plans to invest 830 million dollars (€755 M) in the airports’ infrastructure throughout the concession period. This includes 250 million dollars (€227 M) for a new terminal in Santo Domingo.
Through its affiliate Aerodom, VINCI already broke ground for the new passenger terminal at Las Américas International Airport (AILA). The project is due by 2028. It will expand the airport’s capacity by 4 million passengers per year and set a new benchmark in Dominican airport infrastructure.
The terminal will feature a modern, sustainable design aligned with VINCI Airports’ global standards. It will operate alongside the existing terminal. This development follows the Innovation pillar of VINCI Concessions, incorporating cutting-edge designs and technologies to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Additionally, the company presented the alternate runway 18-36, which is now operational thanks to the adaptation of a former taxiway. Executed by Aerodom in coordination with the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC), the project enhances AILA’s resilience and operational capacity. It ensures uninterrupted air connectivity during upcoming improvements to the main runway 17-35.
Since Aerodom joined VINCI Airports’ network, traffic at Dominican airports has grown by 6% a year between 2016 and 2019. It reached 6.846 million passengers in 2024, up by 4,0 % compared to 2023 and by 22% compared to 2019. Santo Domingo alone welcomed 5.81 million passengers in 2024, up by 3.2% compared to 2023.
