Don’t drink and ski, insurance firm warns

An insurance company has warned skiers that claims could be invalid if they drink while on the slopes.

Insureandgo said almost nine out of ten holidaymakers have no idea their claims could be rejected if accidents happen after a few beers.

The results emerged in a survey which revealed almost half of skiers and snowboarders admitted to taking to the piste after a lunchtime session.

Furthermore, 35% of men and 15% of women confessed to have gone skiing while drunk.

Insureandgo director Perry Wilson stressed the company was not trying to scaremonger – just raise awareness that one too many could be costly.

“We are not killjoys and we know drinking is part of being on holiday but we are asking people to think about the amount they drink during the day,” he said. “We want them to view it as though they were driving.

“As our survey shows, the vast majority of people are not aware that drinking excessively could invalidate a travel insurance claim and we felt it an importance issue to raise.”

He said claims where drink has been a factor are examined on a case-by-case basis.

The survey of 5000 people revealed that 62% believed an insurance company shouldn’t pay out if the claimant was “blind drunk.”

More than one in ten said they don’t even bother with insurance.
