Double celebration for Queenstown
Queenstown in New Zealand’s South Island is gearing up for a huge October.
During the month, the Queenstown region will celebrate two major milestones – the 100th birthday of the TSS Earnslaw steamship and the 150th anniversary of gold discovered in Central Otago.
The TSS Earnslaw’s century on Lake Wakatipu will be celebrated with a week-long party from October 14-22 which will include lake cruises, period costumes and live entertainment.
TSS Earnslaw, who had a role in the Indiana Jones movie, is the only remaining coal-fired passenger vessel still operating in the Southern Hemisphere.
From October 9-22 there will also be celebrations to mark 150 years since the discovery of gold in the region. Events will be held in Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Kingston over four days.
Events will include the New Zealand Gold Panning Championships, Chinese Village Theatre and Glenorchy Day.
