Dozens dead as Halong Bay cruise ship capsizes

Sunday, 20 Jul, 2025 0

Search and rescue operations are still continuing in Halong Bay, Vietnam after a tourist cruise boat capsized in bad weather.

Saturday’s accident has so far claimed 38 lives.

The boat capsized in a squall in the UNESCO world heritage site.

The vessel was carrying 48 tourists and five crew members.

Most of the ship’s guest areas have been searched by divers but the cockpit and engine room is stuck in mud.

“I am certain there are no more bodies in the passenger cabin. I only worry that some bodies may have drifted outside,” said diver Đinh Khắc Giông

Authorities say 10 people were rescued.

All tourists on the boat, called Wonder Sea, were Vietnamese, with most of them families from Hanoi including more than 20 children.

The accident happened near the Dau Go Cave.
