Dozens ill in Spain hotel Salmonella outbreak
As many as 190 people were ill after a suspected Salmonella outbreak at a Spain hotel.
The first cases were reported a week ago at Hotel Izán Cavanna in La Manga.
It escalated rapidly with around 190 reporting illness, including several children and an infant.
Reported symptoms were vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The timing suggests a common lunch meal as the likely source.
Around 50 hotel guests were taken to hospital.
Around 19 remain in hospital and included a pregnant woman.
The hotel’s kitchen facilities were shut down straight while a health inspection and outbreak investigation is carried out.
As of the weekend this was still continuing.
Authorities are still awaiting the completion of lab tests for confirmation it is Salmonella
“The hotel is fully aware of the situation and is actively collaborating with the authorities,” the hotel said.
Public health inspectors have reportedly uncovered hygiene deficiencies and are expected to take action against the hotel.
