Famous explorer’s house to be turned into a tourist attraction

The house where the legendary explorer Dr David Livingstone lived in Tanzania could soon be turned into a tourist attraction, once it has been restored to its former glory.

The 19th century building, in the coastal fishing village of Mikindani, is in a dilapidated state at the moment. But work by the UK-based charity Trade Aid means that a total renovation can now go ahead, and there are plans for a museum, shop, and accommodation for tourists.

A spokesman for the charity told The Independent: “Dr Livingstone stayed in the building for up to a month in 1866, just beforehe set off on his final journey into the interior. He wasn’t seen again until his legendary meeting with Henry Stanley five years later. Dr Livingstone’s visit to Mikindani has had a lasting impact on the locals and they are all very proud to be associated with him.”

Trade Aid is now appealing for more than £20,000 to help pay for the renovation.
