Dreamliner hit by yet another problem
Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner has suffered a further setback after Japan Airlines maintenance staff reported seeing smoke coming from an aircraft that was parked at Narita airport yesterday.
An inspection found the main battery was damaged and US regulators have launched an investigation in conjunction with Japanese authorities, said the Financial Times.
Japan Airlines and Boeing said it was possible the smoke had come from the battery, but this has not been confirmed.
All Dreamliners worldwide were grounded for more than three months from last January after lithium-ion batteries on two aircraft caught fire. Boeing has since introduced modifications to try to prevent the batteries from overheating and they have been placed in a metal case with air vents to ensure any smoke is directed outside the aircraft.
