Dreamworld to stay closed for investigations after four killed on ride

A popular Gold Coast theme park will remain closed indefinitely while an investigation takes place into how four people died on a ride.

Two men and two women in their 30s and 40s died on the Thunder River Rapids ride at Dreamworld, in

A Queensland ambulance spokesman said a ‘malfunction’ had caused two people to be thrown from the ride while the two others were trapped inside.

Police have confirmed all four were from Canberra, and media reports suggest they may all be members of the same family.

They were in the same raft when it flipped over on a conveyor belt. Two children who were also in the raft were injured but not considered life threatening.

The conveyor belt where the accident took place also powers the adjacent log flume ride which had a near fatal accident itself earlier this year.

The Rocky Hollow Log Ride was temporarily closed in April after a man was thrown from the ride and almost drowned.

Dreamworld CEO Craig Davidson said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by this and our hearts and our thoughts go to the families involved and to their loved ones."

Davidson confirmed the park will remain closed indefinitely while police continue investigations
