Drink / drug tests for all BA staff
British Airways has reportedly become the first UK carrier to introduce alcohol and drug testing for all staff.
As reported by News From Abroad, flight staff and engineers are already subject to strict laws relating to alcohol and drugs, but in the light of stories about pilots and cabin crew being caught drinking, the rules now apply to all ground staff including check-in staff and baggage handlers.
According to the Daily Telegraph, they will face tests if they are involved in a workplace accident or if they are suspected of being under the influence. The newspaper states that random tests will also take place during any worker’s first six months of employment, and if staff are returning to work after drink or drug rehabilitation.
Any staff found to have more than 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood could face dismissal. A spokesman reportedly said: “This policy reinforces our commitment to the highest safety standards in the air and on the ground.”
