At least 35 people were injured in Switzerland yesterday when two trains crashed head-on, killing one driver.

Four passengers sustained serious injuries in the crash which happened near Granges-Marnand in the west of the country, 30 miles southwest of the capital Bern, just before 19:00hrs yesterday.

One of the trains was heading to Lausanne, the other to Payerne, when they hit each other head on. The impact knocked both trains partly off the tracks.

One of the injured was taken to Lausanne by helicopter. Others were treated at the site by paramedics or taken to hospital by ambulance.

The crash happened less than a week after 79 people were killed in a high-speed train crash in Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
