Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple complex has announced a ban on the flying of drones over the UNESCO world heritage site.
The Apsara Authority, the agency which manages the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap said a drone no-fly zone is in effect since earlier this month and the use of unauthorised drones will be a criminal matter investigated by the police.
"This is a management decision to improve the image of our Angkor temples, as this is very important," spokesperson Long Kosal told the Khmer Times.
"The ban on using drones to take pictures in the Angkor area is to ensure safety for citizens, international and national tourists, and to prevent negative effects on the temples."
Any application for the use of drones will be considered by the agency if made in advance, according to a letter by Apsara Authority director general Sum Mab which was sent to government ministries and tourism stakeholders notifying them of the new ruling.
