Ever-increasing numbers of flights out of the Middle East to Asia and Europe have contributed towards Dubai International Airport now outstripping New York’s JFK in terms of capacity.
According to September figures by aviation intelligence gatherer OAG in its Frequency and Capacity Trends Statistics Report, Dubai has seen a 14% increase in seat capacity year on year while the Middle Eastern airports saw a 11% leap in capacity and frequency for September, both within and to and from the region.
OAG says there are 5.2 million seats available in September compared with 4.9 million at JFK.
Dubai International is currently on an upward curve thanks to a supportive government keen to nurture international markets.
Signs of life showed in North America’s growth figures for September. For a second month, there was movement upwards with capacity increasing 3% on September last year.
Meanwhile, some Asian destinations are showing astoning capacity growth. Jakarta saw 45% growth while Shanghai and Kolkata registered a rise of 19% each.
Chief Executive officer at UBM Aviation Peter von Moltke said: "Although Asia Pacific is a well-known area of growth, all eyes should continue to watch the region, specifically traffic to and from Delhi. Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) recently opened a new terminal, creating great potential for this airport to become an effective connecting gateway and a viable competitor to other international hubs.”
