Dubrovnik to roll out new traffic control system around historic center
Dubrovnik is introducing a new traffic regulation system in and around its UNESCO-listed Old Town, aimed at protecting cultural heritage and improving sustainable mobility.
Announced by the Croatian National Tourist Board, the new measures will take effect from April 1 through October 31, 2026, as well as during peak travel periods. Vehicle access will be restricted across an expanded perimeter surrounding the historic center, including key areas from Pile to Boninovo and along Zagrebačka Street linking Ilijina Glavica to Viktorija.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to better manage visitor flows in one of the Adriatic’s most popular destinations, while enhancing quality of life for residents and ensuring a smoother visitor experience.
Across 2025, Dubrovnik is estimated to have exceeded 4 million overnight stays, underlining its status as one of the Adriatic’s most visited hotspots.
Pre-booking required for vehicle access
Travelers planning to drive into Dubrovnik are advised to arrange accommodation and parking in advance, as access to the restricted zone will be conditional.
Visitors staying at hotels or private rentals that include parking must contact their host ahead of arrival. Hosts are required to reserve the parking space and register the vehicle’s license plate in advance.
For those without pre-arranged parking, entry to the zone will only be possible by booking a space through Dubrovnik’s prepaid parking system or official app. Designated parking areas are located near the Dubrovnik Cable Car and in the Pile zone.
City officials say the streamlined system is designed to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and support a more მშვიდ and sustainable tourism model.
Focus on sustainable tourism
Dubrovnik continues to position itself as a leader in responsible tourism management, with measures that balance visitor demand and heritage preservation. By limiting vehicle access and encouraging forward planning, the city aims to deliver a more enjoyable and stress-free experience for both residents and tourists.
Travelers are strongly encouraged to confirm access conditions and secure both accommodation and parking prior to arrival.
