Eden Project coming to China
The operators of the UK’s iconic eco-tourism attraction The Eden Project plan to build a US$150 million Chinese version.
Eden Project is partnering with developer China Jinmao Holdings Limited to build the China Eden Centre near the city of Qingdao.
"This is a hugely exciting moment for Eden and its partners in this great venture. The ambition for China Eden is to create a globally-renowned and iconic tourism attraction and centre which demonstrates the highest-quality sustainable construction practices – just as Eden has in the UK," said Eden Project founder Sir Tim Smit.
"It has the potential to become instantly recognisable worldwide. Think Sydney Opera House in its scale, creativity and instant recognition," Smit added.
Since its opening in 2001, 16 million people have visited the Eden Project and was recently voted as the top British landmark of the 21st century.
It features thousands of plant species from the Mediterranean and tropical regions housed in huge artificial biodomes.
China Eden Centre will be the company’s first major venture overseas.
