Egyptian visa news welcomed

Operators have welcomed the announcement that it is 'business as usual' with Egyptian visas for holidaymakers.

Reports had suggested that Egypt was going to insist that tourists obtain visas before travelling, which the trade feared could further hinder Egypt's recovery as a popular holiday destination.

But the Egyptian consulate has reassured the trade that visas can still be obtained on arrival.

"Visas can still be obtained when you arrive – it's business as usual," said a spokeswoman for the Egyptian consulate.

Mosaic Holidays welcomed the statement adding that Egypt, above all, needed clarity.

"It's extremely difficult to sell a destination with uncertainty and we've had a number of travel agents on the phone telling us off for not being able to tell them one way or the other. We weren't impressed when we heard visas may be needed. This is not what Egypt needs. We need clarity,” said sales director Darren Panto.

He added that levels of interest in Egypt were up on previous months and looking positive.
