Eight dead after speed boat capsizes in Indonesia
At least eight people died after a speedboat capsized off the Indonesian coast of Borneo.
The Anugrah Express boat had just left Tanjung Selor en route to the city of Tarakan when it overturned.
Search and rescue authorities said 40 people were rescued and the cause of the accident is still to be determined.
"We don’t know yet what caused the accident and how exactly it happened," rescue agency spokesperson Gusti Anwar Mulyadi said.
Weather conditions were reportedly fine at the time.
Ferries and small boats are the main and often only transport option for large areas of the island nation but safety is poor and overcrowding on boats is common.
Exactly a year ago, 20 people died after a ferry burst into flames shortly after departing Jakarta for the popular tourist island of Tidung.
In that incident the vessel was carrying more than double the number of passengers officially recorded on its manifest.
