Eight die in Bali after drinking home brew
Visitors to Bali are being warned to avoid drinking palm and rice wine after a toxic home brew killed at least eight locals.
Sanglah Hospital spokesman Putra Wibawa said as well as those who had died another five were being treated for poisoning.
Victims included residents of the tourist hot spots of Kuta, Denpasar and Ubud.
“The symptoms lead us to believe it is methanol poisoning,” Wibawa told AAP.
Last year 25 people, including four foreign tourists, died in Bali and in nearby Lombok after drinking arak laced with methanol.
Arak has become increasingly popular since the Indonesian government raised taxes on imported alcohol, making it too expensive for most Indonesians.
