Eight hurt in Tunisia bombing

Tourists to Tunisia’s capital Tunis are being warned to avoid an area of the city after a 30-year-old female suicide bomber blew herself up on a busy street right in the centre.

At least nine people were hurt in the bombing yesterday afternoon, but there are no reported fatalities other than the bomber.

Eight of those hurt in the explosion on Avenue Habib Bourguiba were police officers.

No group has said it is behind the attack, which is being described by the Tunis authorities as a terror incident.

It comes at a time when British holidaymakers are starting to return to the country three years after a travel ban imposed following two deadly terror attacks, the first at the Bardo Museum in Tunis in March 2015, which was followed by the gunning down of 38 tourists, including 30 Britons, at the beach resort of Sousse three months later.

Following yesterday’s bombing, the Foreign Office advised people to avoid the immediate vicinity of Avenue Habib Bourguiba. "The British Embassy is in touch with the local authorities; we advise British nationals to follow the advice of local police and security forces and avoid the immediate vicinity of Avenue Habib Bourguiba," it said.

Any one who has been affected who needs consular assistance should call the British Embassy on +216 71 108 700; if you’re in the UK and worried about someone in Tunisia, call the FCO in London on 020 7008 1500."
