Emirates Melbourne Cup under starters orders!

Sunday, 02 Nov, 2007 0
The eyes of the international racing and social world will be focused on Melbourne next week, with Tuesday’s Emirates Melbourne Cup being the highlight of the Melbourne Cup Carnival in Australia.

Emirates, a Principal Partner of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, will be hosting the crème de la crème of Australia’s social scene and business leaders in their exclusive hospitality marquee, which this year is themed around Venice, one of Emirates’ new destinations in 2007.

Venice is a city built on islands in the middle of a lagoon, the marquee, inspired by the grandeur of architecture and weaving canals will feature a likeness to Venice both inside and out.

An elegant Venetian façade mirrored on the Doge’s Palace and gothic villas that line the banks of the Grand Canal will welcome guests to the marquee, who will enter at ‘water’ level. Above their heads is a dramatic curved bridge that serves to carry guests from the entrance to the dining level. Beyond the bridge, a water feature spills over from the upper level to the ground level.

Maurice Flanagan, Executive Vice Chairman, Emirates Airline and Group, said: “The Emirates Melbourne Cup is a day that Australia looks forward to and we are proud to be able to support this marvellous event. As they say in Melbourne, it is the ‘race that stops a nation’ and this year will be no exception.
“We always look forward to welcoming our guests to watch the racing and fashion spectacle from our marquee. Emirates’ sponsorship of the Emirates Melbourne Cup and the Emirates Stakes Day further enhances our partnership with Australia; and also with major international sporting events.”

Runners for the AUS$ 5.1 million Emirates Melbourne Cup, which last year saw a Japanese first and second with Delta Blues beating Pop Rock, will be announced on Saturday, the first day of the Carnival.

Emirates has a great affinity with horse racing. In addition to its sponsorship of the Emirates Melbourne Cup and Emirates Stakes Day, the Dubai-based global airline was an Official Partner of last weekend’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships in America and the previous weekend’s Emirates Champion Stakes held at Newmarket Racecourse in England. Emirates is also the title sponsor of the Singapore Derby and the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup.

The Mole will be there on Tuesday to report live from the Melbourne Cup.
