Emirates, SIA send cabin crew on leave
DUBAI – Even the best-performing airlines are having to cut back as tough economic conditions spread across the globe.
Emirates cabin crew is being offered a minimum of one month’s unpaid leave – up to a maximum of six months.
Local media confirmed that unpaid leave would be granted from May 1 to individuals depending on seniority and the aircraft type the crew was trained to operate on.
And more than 1,400 Singapore Airlines staff have volunteered to take unpaid leave.
Compulsory leave and a wage freeze for managers have not been ruled out.
The airline said that in-principle agreement has been reached with two of its key unions for shorter work months from May 1.
The measures are necessary because of plans by SIA to cut capacity by 11 per cent over the next 12 months.
SIA will also take 17 aircraft out of service.
