Engine trouble forces emergency landing for Air Canada Boeing Max jet

Sunday, 28 Dec, 2020 0

A Boeing Max jet experienced the first mid-air safety issue since regulators began clearing the aircraft to fly again.

An Air Canada Max 8 suffered an engine malfunction that forced the pilots to shut it down.

The flight made an emergency landing in Tucson, Arizona.

The aircraft had just been taken out of storage where it had been for several months due to the pandemic.

It was headed for Montreal and was carrying only three crew members.

Pilots received a hydraulic low pressure alert in the left engine, and decided to divert to Tucson.

The incident happened on 22 December.

"Modern aircraft are designed to operate with one engine and our crews train for such operations," the airline said in a statement.

The issue doesn’t seem to relate to the flawed Max software which was a factor in two deadly crashes which killed 346 people.

It is also unclear whether the engine issue is a result of the aircraft being sat idle for many months.

It is the first known incident since the FAA gave the go-ahead for the aircraft to fly again in the US a month ago.

That hasn’t happened commercially yet, although American Airlines is expected to start Max flights this week.
