England fan killed in Portugal
A British football fan has reportedly been stabbed to death in Portugal following last night’s match against Croatia.
According to the BBC News website, the man was killed in Lisbon’s Rossio Square in the early hours of this morning in an attempted robbery.
The website quotes a Foreign Office spokesman as saying: “We can confirm that a British national has been killed.” The BBC reports that the man, who has not been identified, was taken to the city’s San Jose hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
There had been no trouble involving England fans after the match, the BBC correspondent reports, with no arrests, and that the mood in Lisbon had been “peaceful” after the game.
He said that some England supporters had been celebrating in Rossio Square, but that there was no evidence of any “fighting” before the English man’s death.
