England’s World Cup hotel fined for out-of-date food
Health officials have issued fines for out-of-date food to the five-star hotel where the England team is due to stay during the World Cup.
After an inspection at the Royal Tulip Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, officials confiscated 700g of butter, 400g of Parma ham and nearly 1.2kg of salmon past its sell-by date.
The raid comes less than two weeks before the team is due to arrive in Brazil.
According to the Telegraph, the Football Association said it was not worried by the out-of-date products because all meals will be prepared by a chef travelling with the squad, who will also closely supervise all the players’ food intake.
More than 50kg of food deemed unfit for consumption was also taken from the nearby Portobello Hotel where Italy will stay.
The food at the Caesar Park Hotel, where the Dutch team will stay, met all of the criteria.
Half of Brazil’s 12 host stadiums failed to meet FIFA’s December deadline for completion, while work on hotels, airports and roads has also suffered delays.
