Escape from New York

Tuesday, 29 Dec, 2010 0

When super-busy New York City, one of the world’s top tourist destinations becomes too busy, do what the natives do: take a quick escape to Long Island or Suffolk County.

“It’s a two-hour trip from midtown Manhattan, and the landscape is entirely different. It’s green and beachy, and it is all but decreed that stress must be left at the border,” writes Jennifer Merin, author of the “Around the World” column.

She advises taking the train or renting a car to Suffolk County, where don’t-miss sites include the Vanderbilt Museum, which reflects his eclectic curiosities; Northport Village, which has a scenic harbor; and taking a wine tasting tour of the Wolffer Estate Vineyard.

“All of the beach communities have superb beaches, but Long Island is also a great destination for boating,” she writes. Motorboats of all types can be rented.

Nearby Montauk is a commercial fishing center where restaurants serve fresh-off-the-boat fish.

And Rowdy Hall is a popular pub with a French bistro menu.

Another don’t-miss place is LongHouse Reserve, which celebrates the intersection of art and nature. Art exhibits are arranged throughout the gardens and arboretum with many works by noted artists.
