EURO 2008: The countdown to football and cultural delights begins
Vienna is one of the world’s great music cities, so it is fitting that the world of culture will also provide a backdrop to the UEFA EURO 2008™ celebrations with concerts and exhibitions.
The concert schedule during EURO 2008 features three open-air concerts in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. By way of a “warm upâ€, on June 3, the Vienna Philharmonic with conductor Georges Prêtre will be giving a free concert.
On June 27, it will be the turn of opera stars Anna Netrebko, Plácido Domingo and Rolando Villazón, followed next day by virtuoso pianist Lang Lang and the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Zubin Mehta.
Elton John will also be putting in an appearance on June 28, the day before the final, at the Hohe Warte stadium which will also be reverberating to the sounds of the operetta The Merry Widow on June 27. The stadium will also play host to opera stars including Elīna Garanca, Edita Gruberova and Ramón Vargas alongside the Vienna Boys’ Choir (June 23), while Austropop legend Wolfgang Ambros will be rocking the Hohe Warte on June 24.
Vienna’s museums and exhibition venues have also put together a wide and varied program for the football event of the year. The Kunsthistorische Museum, one of world’s greatest art collections, has a special treat for football fans entitled Wir sind Europameister (We are the champions of Europe).
The interactive exhibition herz:rasen at the Künstlerhaus will set fans’ pulses racing, while Rund um den Ball at the Zoom Children’s Museum will be offering stories from the world of football.
