European hotel prices tumble

Hotel prices in the majority of popular European cities have dropped this month, with Madrid seeing the sharpest fall in prices.

Rates at hotels in the Spanish capital are down 41% over June, falling to an average of €90 for a double, according to hotel comparison site trivago’s latest Hotel Price Index.

Paris has seen prices fall by 18% to an average of €138, while prices in Amsterdam (above), one of the most expensive cities in Europe, are also down by 18% to €140.

Vienna and Rome have reported month-on-month falls of 14% and 13% respectively.

Looking a year-on-year price comparisons, Moscow and Lisbon (left) have seen the sharpest decrease in hotel prices. Travellers visiting the Russian capital will pay €58 for a standard double room for an overnight stay, a decrease of 41% compared to last year, while Lisbon reports a decrease of 16% compared to July 2018, to an average of €100 per room per night.

The city with the city with the largest month-on-month price increase, according to tHPI, is Istanbul, where rates are up 10% to an average of €73 a night. Prices are also up in Reykjavik, by 7% to an average of €156 for an overnight stay.

Worldwide, Manila in the Philippines has seen the biggest increase in prices year-on-year, with rates rocketing 51% to an average of €74, according to tHPI.

Las Vegas follows with a 26% year-on-year rise to €114 for a double room. In Lima, prices are up 25% over July 2018.
