European hotel prices tumble

Wednesday, 12 Feb, 2014 0

Hotel prices across Europe are down by an average of 7% year on year, according to hotel comparison website Trivago, with some destinations seeing double-digit drops.

It said guests are paying an average of £82 a night this month but prices in some cities are much lower.

In Norway, prices are down 15% year on year to £123 a night on average, said Trivago; in Bulgaria prices are also down 15%, to £46 a night. In France, average rates are down 12% to £100 and in Sweden they are also down 12%, to £130.

Individual cities with the largest Y-O-Y percentages decreases are Oslo (down 14 per cent to £125), Sofia (down 13 per cent to £47) and Munich (down 11 per cent to £98).

Spokeswoman Denise Bartlett said: "Although it is normal to see huge price differences between summer and winter, particularly during January and February, it is unusual to see a year-on-year drop in hotel prices of more than a few per cent.

"This suggests a general trend of decreasing hotel prices, and it will be interesting to see how hotel prices this summer compare to the summer of 2013."

Trivago’s data also shows that the highest prices were during May, June and August, but not July.

"It is clear that hotel prices are at their highest during (school’s) May half-term and August summer holidays," added Bartlett.
