Eurostar goes carbon neutral
Eurostar is planning to make all journeys carbon neutral when it switches operations to the newly refurbished St Pancras Station in London tomorrow (Tuesday).
The news emerged at the ETOA conference where the train operator said consumers are seeking ways to change and improve their behaviour when it comes to the environment.
Eurostar director of communications Simon Montague said the carbon neutrality would be achieved through a combination of offsetting and reducing emissions.
“The industry has a duty to act in addition to the commercial reasons. We started down this road about 18 months ago when big corporate clients came to us for ways of cutting their CO2 emissions.”
Earlier this year Eurostar announced its plan to cut CO2 emissions by 25% per traveller journey by 2012. The target is being achieved through systems advising drivers of their energy consumption, sourcing cleaner sources of electricity and better load factors.
Montague said implementing a green strategy required buy-in from the top as well as full-time committed resources.
“It’s a long term gain but we believe it will become more and more important. It’s the new smoking.”
