Exploring the museums of the Space Coast
Florida´s Space Coast is home to 72 miles of beaches, inland waterways, and stunning natural landscapes.
It is also steeped in history and culture.
The museums of Brevard County allow visitors the opportunity to explore and be inspired by art, innovation, and heroism with a journey back in time.
The American Space Museum and Space Walk of Fame in Titusville presents space memorabilia which was donated by the actual astronauts and engineers who worked on the various space missions. Visitors can spend hours exploring spacecraft parts, astronaut suits and artifacts from manned and unmanned space flights and probes. The Space Walk of Fame honours space workers and astronauts in the nearby Space View Park.
The Space Coast’s biggest collection of vintage aircraft is to be found at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, also in Titusville. Aviation enthusiasts can get close enough to touch more than 45 immaculately restored warbirds from all eras and might even experience one in flight. The volunteer docents are experienced airmen keen to share their in-depth knowledge. The museum offers three full hangars of planes, jets, helicopters and military memorabilia.
Just north of Titusville in the town of Mims, at The Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Cultural Center and Museum visitors will encounter the life and work of the some of the first activists of the modern civil rights era in Florida. Guests explore their history through interactive exhibits, historical collections and dynamic speakers and even visit the replica of the historic home and stroll the Civil Rights Trail. This is a walking tour that winds through orange trees in the grounds.
An array of historic houses dating from 1875 onwards are to be found throughout the region. John H. Sams Homestead in the Pine Island Conservation Area is the oldest and surrounded by numerous trails and an abundance of Florida wildlife. Field Manor was the first house built on Merritt Island in the 1880s, portraying a typical homestead of the time. Lawndale is a renovated Victorian home located one mile south of Cocoa Village presenting life in Central Florida in the late 1890s and the Historic Rossetter House Museum & Gardens transport the visitor into the history of the Eau Gallie Arts District.
Discover immersive and interactive displays at the Barrier Island Sanctuary in the Archie Carr National Refuge. While those fascinated by the world of surfing can follow the evolution from 100-pound redwood boards to the highly engineered and lightweight boards of today in the Florida Surf Museum inside Ron Jon Surf Shop on Cocoa Beach.
Visitors in search of the more extraordinary will be transported down the Yellow Brick Road in the Wizard of Oz Museum in the City of Cape Canaveral and encounter the famous characters, series of books and nostalgia on display.
