Express bus crash in China kills 36
Authorities in China are stepping up safety checks in the country’s bus industry after a deadly crash killed dozens.
A long-distance express bus crashed into the wall of highway tunnel in Shaanxi, killing at least 36 people.
A further 13 were injured, some seriously, state media reported.
Minister of Public Security, Guo Shengkun ordered an immediate inquiry.
Early reports said no other vehicle was involved, leading to suggestions driver fatigue may be a factor in the midnight crash.
However, after images of the crash site were released netizens noted a possible design flaw as the expressway leading into the tunnel is much wider than the tunnel itself.
Pictures showed a severely mangled front end of the bus.
Officials from the state administration of work safety and the ministry of transport have been dispatched to the crash site and ordered local authorities to undertake thorough safety checks of vehicles.
