‘Extra’ border staff may not be trained
Ministry of Defence police have been drafted in to man passport desks according to the Sunday Times, as Heathrow reports queues have eased.
The leaked email from a senior official in the UK Border Force shows the civilian officers as well as civil servants were being used to provide the extra staff needed.
It warned that some may not be fully trained.
The email written by Tony McMullin, interim regional director of the border force’s northern region, said MOD staff ‘will, of course, not be fully trained or experienced and most will have contingency pool training only (level 1 or level 2) and your deployment plan should take this into account’.
The Government claims it has always planned to send extra staff to ports and airports to cope with the influx of visitors expected for the Olympics.
