‘Extra care’ urged by State Department
The US State Department has urged American travelers to be extra careful, citing terrorism and anti-American violence abroad.
“The Department of State is deeply concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks against US citizens and interests abroad, as well as the potential for demonstrations and violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas,” the warning said.
“US citizens are encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness,” it added.
The short warning updates a similar warning issued last fall and expires in September 2005. It gives no source for assertions about al-Qaida or other terrorist capabilities, reported The Associated Press.
According to the US State Department, foreign hostages have been executed in the hostages’ home countries. “While Americans are generally not the targets in such incidents, US citizens could be caught up in the violence,” the warning noted.
