Eye security set for Heathrow

Foreign passport holders who visit Britain frequently are to have their eyes photographed to capture their unique iris patterns.

An iris recognition system will be implemented at British airports within a few months to tighten up immigration controls, The Times reports.

The passport and personal details of travellers will be stored on a database run by the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, and when they arrive at an airport, people registered will look at an iris scanner at the immigration gate, which will then open automatically.

The scheme will be voluntary and it is hoped a million people will be registered within five years, The Times says.

It is expected to be introduced at Heathrow’s Terminals 2 and 4 this spring.
