Responsible tourism week starts 13 Feb 2012

Fall in love with responsible tourism February 13-17, 2012 as Planeta.com hosts its 4th annual, week-long online unconference and invite friends to create engaging local events around the world.

Responsible Tourism Week is a fun, free, five-day mash-up exploring down-to-earth applications of noble concepts including responsible tourism, conscious travel, the local travel movement and ecotourism with effective and inexpensive social media. We welcome partners and financial sponsors, particularly institutions willing to invest in digital literacy training for officials and local tourism pros.

Says Planeta: “Responsible tourism is a must-have in the growing movement that connects visitors and locals. A growing number of travelers want their journeys to be less invasive and more beneficial to the local community. They want to better understand the culture of the people they meet in the places they visit. Visitors should be mindful that we are entering a place that is someone else's home. Sounds complicated? Try this – imagine what irresponsible tourism looks like and then imagine its opposite.”

“Responsible tourism is treating others the way they wish to be treated. It's a variation on the Platinum Rule … it's also common sense and good manners. Put another way – courtesy of the 2002 Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism — responsible tourism creates better places for people to live and better places to visit.”

Planeta is seeking sponsors for Responsible Tourism Week to help cover the cost of the event including informational materials and training workshops. Benefits include a link on this page and logo on the official event info.

Premium sponsors are asked to underwrite week-long training sessions for local leaders.
Ron Mader, Planeta’s founder, offers the social media webinar to introduce various channels and an integrated communication strategy for government officials, activists and tourism pros. If you would like to join this unique initiative, contact Ron: [email protected]
